The Chicago Torture Justice Memorials project invited artists and those who seek justice of all kinds to submit speculative proposals for a monument to memorialize the Chicago Police torture cases. Our goal was to honor the survivors of torture, their family members and the African American communities affected by the torture. The collection of memorial proposals also recalls and honors the nearly two-decades long struggle for justice waged by torture survivors and their families, attorneys, community organizers, and people from every neighborhood and walk of life in Chicago. This project combined with the ongoing work of activists built a Reparations Campaign, largely led by Black youth, that succeeded in passing the first municipal Reparations Ordinance to address racially motivated law enforcement violence in the U.S. in 2015.
